Coventry City 96-97: Coventry received double the amount figures this time around, amounting to 8 figures in total (this included Dublin, Ndlovu, Burrows and Ogrizovic who were all released previously in last seasons colours). John Solako featured in a new pose and although this is the first (and last) time he featured in club colours, he was available prior as part of the England squad. Kevin Richardson, Eion Jess and Brizilian striker Isaías Marques Soares completed the line up. Unfortunately there were 4 other figures scheduled but not released, those being Paul Telfer, Noel Whelan, Paul Williams and newest Coventry signing, Gary McAllister. All four did have tooling masters and production models processed as a result.
Coventry City 96-97: Carried over from the previous season are John Filan, Richard Shaw, Marcus Hall and Gordon Strachan. There were quite a few exits from the Coventry squad so new customs sculpts will need to come into the fold., those are; Darren Huckerby,
Liam Daish, Gary Breen, Regis Genaux, Willie Boland, Andrew Ducros and Michael O'Neill
Kit Usage: Coventry debuted their new strip at the start of the 96/97 season facing Nottingham Forest in a 0-3 home defeat with Kevin Campbell bagging a hat-trick against the sky blues. Come the end of the season the relegation battle had come down to the wire and to guarantee their Premier League status the sky blues needed to pull out an away win against Spurs. Coventry eased the pressure on themselves by going 2 goals up thanks to a Dion Dublin header and a great finish from defender Paul Williams (scoring only for his second time that season). Gary McAllister captained the squad and played a vital role claiming two assists. Paul McVeigh equalised just before the break making the second half probably the longest 45 mins Coventry fans had to endure but they held out and survived the drop.
Achievements 96/97:
Premier League: 17th
FA Cup: R5 (3-2 loss to Derby County)
League Cup: R3 (1-0 replay loss to Gillingham)
Things seemed to be getting worse for Coventry who only survived the drop by one point. Neither cup competition was much successful, they made Round 5 of the FA cup but did not progress past round 3 of the league cup.
Make & Sponsor: Coventry switched their kit manufacturer from Pony to Le Coq Sportif for the 96-97 campaign but kept Peugeot (French automotive manufacturer) as their sponsor. The kit itself is a very good attempt from Corinthian as some of the features present on the real kit kit would have been very difficult to replicate. The collar on this kit had a light blue trim with a dark blue checkers pattern. This checkered pattern trim was also present on the outer sleeves, the base of the short and on the two bottom horizontal lines of the socks. On the whole though, Corinthian captured all the main features of the kit. The Peugeot tampo print is a little off as the background should be white with no outlined box effect. Since this problem was a carry over from the last seasons kit , a primed white rectangle was left unpainted on the shirt so that when the tampo print was made over the white section it looked a lot closer to the actual Peugeot logo. There was also a change to the club crest as the outer shield was removed which was not altered on the tampo print but overall, this was a great kit which was well replicated.
